Banner blindness

We underestimate how much location impacts our mindset.

After moving to the UK from Italy and living here for the past 3 years, I can see a change starting form my workouts.

In the UK it rains 80% of the time and with gyms closed during lockdown, I set myself an outdoor workout schedule that I have to stick to no matter the weather.

If I had to workout only when it’s nice out it’d be 3 or 4 times a month.

It takes discipline at first, but then it becomes routine. My mindset has become more resilient.

I don’t think “Am I working out today?” anymore. I think “What workout am I doing today”.

When it’s raining in the UK you only see a handful of people carrying an umbrella. Rain is so common that it almost doesn’t even surface their radar, it’s just an inconvenience.

It’s a kind of “banner blindness”. Like too many ads and banners get automatically overlooked by users because they’re used to them, people become blind and adapt to the constraints of their location.

It might be useful to think about what kind of elements you can become “blind to” on purpose (or where you can move to make that easier).
